Why Airbnb?

Airbnb is the middleman.  People from around the world hire out their house or even just a room, and Airbnb make sure everything is legit and they also provide the booking platform that you can do that on.

You get value for money.  With Airbnb, you can get a whole house for the price you might spend on just one room in a hotel. Plus, you get privacy which is very valuable.  It’s nice as a full-time traveller to rent out an Airbnb and take a break from hostel or hotel life.  Sometimes you want somewhere that feels a bit more like home – and Airbnb provides that.

Over the years and as I get a bit older, I value privacy more than ever, so I wanted to share my love for Airbnb in this guide and show you exactly how you can find great accommodation on Airbnb around the world, plus give you a $35 Airbnb Coupon.

Where do I start?

You must first sign up to Airbnb (if you do it by clicking this link, you will get $35USD Airbnb coupon to go towards your first trip too!).  Airbnb needs to make sure you are a legitimate person and that you are not just going to rob a whole lot of Airbnb’s.  You need to make a profile with all your details and verify yourself using a driver license or Passport.  Again, this is to make sure you are a real person!   Your profile is also for the host.  They will want to know what kind of person is about to rent their Airbnb so make sure you fill everything out in as much detail as possible to increase your chances of being accepted by hosts.

Once Airbnb accepts you can then start your scout of finding the perfect place using these Airbnb tips!

  1. Pick your location and dates

You will need to know where in the world you are going and the dates so that Airbnb can show a list of the available properties on those dates.

  1. Pick how many guests

Note that some properties have limitations on how many people can stay there if you’re renting an entire house.

  1. Pick your house type

The great thing about Airbnb is you have a vast choice of options.  These options include just renting a room within a house or most of the time you can rent the entire house!  If you want even cheaper accommodation you can find that by picking the shared room option.  If you are travelling with someone then you might be better to rent an entire house as that is usually cheaper and you get a private house to yourself.

  1. You can also adjust the price to suit your budget

This way you only see the properties that you can afford!

Airbnb Tips: What should I look for in an Airbnb?

Once you have found a few Airbnb’s that stand out to you, you should investigate them more.

  1. Check the facilities

This is important!  If you need WIFI then make sure they have it.  Do they have parking on site?.  If you need to do laundry, then make sure there are appliances, so you can do that.  Whatever it is you need in a house, make sure they supply that for you!  I have been caught out a couple of times because I forgot to check that the property has WIFI and turns out that they don’t.

  1. Check the check-in time!

Make sure that you can check in at the time you want.  Some hosts have limitations on when you can check in and it doesn’t always suit.  So, to save yours and the hosts time, make sure you check this before applying.  If it doesn’t say, then just ask the host when you send them a message when you apply.

  1. Check the host

Make sure the host is verified and looks legitimate.  Although Airbnb checks that for you it’s still important to cover yourself.  The best way you can do that is by checking the reviews.  If they are new to Airbnb, then check their description and how often they respond.  If there is a no response rate, then that’s a sure sign they are probably not going to reply to you!

Once you have found a suitable property you can then send a request to the host for your dates you want to stay.  Sometimes they have a book instantly option where Airbnb will book instantly like other booking websites.  Other times you have to be approved by the host first.

If you have to be approved then make sure you leave them a nice message explaining who you are, why you want to stay at their property and that you’re excited to stay in their accommodation.  The more detail the better so the host can get to know you and you will have a better acceptance rate.

I’ve applied, now what?

Now you wait!  The hosts have up to 24 hours to accept.  When accepted your card will be charged and your booking will be confirmed.

Once the host is accepted they will get in contact, so you can sort out the keys and where/what time to meet.  It’s that easy!

Your end of the deal

As an Airbnb guest, you must be respectful to the host and to his/her property.  After all, it is their house so make sure:

-You don’t destroy or damage anything on the property

-Be considerate of the neighbours, no wild parties

-Don’t go using their food or looking in their private cabinets.

Treat the place how you would like your house to be treated, it’s as easy as that.

When it’s all done…

You will be asked to leave a review of the property and the host. Make sure you do this as it helps towards not only their ratings but yours as well.  Be honest and take the time to leave a thoughtful review.  Remember to say thank you to your host for letting you stay at their place and also remember to grab your Airbnb coupon!

Great beginners tips for AirBnB. I haven’t used AirBnB yet, and it’s very intriguing. This is so good to know especially if we decide (in the future) to try it. Just a question though. I understand that giving a rating is important for other guests to know about your experience. But, what do you mean for ‘my rating’? Will I have trust rating on my profile too?

Yes, the reviews that the hosts leave you will be available on your public profile. So, if you get a bad rating there’s a higher chance that the next host will see that and decline you. Thanks for reading 🙂

I’ve always been a little nervous of AirBnB though I know many people have had many fantastic experiences, I think the stories of the nightmare ones still give me cause to worry. I’ve had two experiences myself, one amazing and one frustrating. For the positive one, we found this incredible traditional bamboo-thatched 150 year old wooden house in Japan via the site and that was a highlight of the trip. For the negative, we booked an apartment in Kyoto for a week, in high season, quite far in advance. A few weeks before travel, the owner cancelled on me, by which time every other well-priced apartment had been booked and I had to pay through the nose for a hotel! Aargh! But I need to dip my toes in again!!

You really do find the most unique places on Airbnb. That’s part of the reason why I love it so much. Unfortunately, there’s always a chance it can go wrong, just like the other booking sites. Thanks for reading!

I’ve almost only stayed in Airbnbs when travelling over the past few years! I totally agree with your tips…especially check-in times. The first few times I used Airbnb, I saved money on airfare by arriving early in the morning…but had to pay a supplement for early check-in! Always depends on the host so it’s best to check!

Yes, it’s always best to check beforehand. Those cheap airfares always save you money but seem to cost you in another way, shape or form!

Great tips you’re handing out here! I think Airbnb is great for saving money but you have to know how to book and what to look for, especially if the host looks legitimate: I’m saving this article!

i love AirBNB. It is a great option when there are quite a number of you travelling or if you are travelling with family but want your own room. We have booked a bunch of unique properties in South Africa this April using Airbnb and I am really excited about them.

I have not usually used Airbnb but my daughter regularly does. I have tended to use our timeshare, hotels, or VRBO. Once my friend and I tried one in Rome and we found out the room is on the third floor with steep narrow stairs for access. And the photos looked nice but the room was very small, I never tried again.

We have not used AirBNB till now. However, we have checked it for properties for some of our planned vacations. We did find some good properties but did not go with them as our plans had changed. What I like about Airbnb is the fact that you get entire houses which are so handy when you are traveling with family. You have given some great pointers when selecting a place on Airbnb, especially looking at the response rate of the hosts.

Airbnbs have become such a wonderful way to see the real side of a city. I know a lot fo people that are still unsure of how to find a good rental so your guide is a great starting point. Your tip on checking the host is one of the best tips I would recommend too!

I love staying at Airbnbs when I travel. In fact, I’m off to one in Miami tomorrow! It’s great to find an Airbnb that’s a good price obviously, but also great location and has the amenities you’re looking for. Sometimes I’m looking just for a comfy place to rest my head at night, and sometimes more than that. Thanks for the guide!
