Top Tips for Camping in Albania

Regarding Albania campsites, there are a few things to remember. First and foremost, be sure to research the location of your campsite before setting out (my Albania travel guide is a good place to start).

While many campsites are well-maintained and easy to find, others can be more difficult to locate.

It’s also important to ensure that your campsite is close to a source of water and food, as these can be hard to come by in some areas.

Additionally, it’s important to know the local climate when camping in Albania (see my Albania weather guide).

The mountainous terrain means that weather can change quickly, and it’s not uncommon for temperatures to drop drastically at night.

Be sure to bring appropriate clothing, camping gear, plenty of water, food, and a first-aid kit.

Finally, respect the local wildlife and environment when camping in Albania. Make sure to leave no trace and be mindful of local regulations (more in my Albania travel tips).

1. Wild Camping is Allowed

One of the great things about Albania campsites is that wild camping is allowed in most areas.

This type of camping is a great way to explore the country and experience its natural beauty without the need for a campsite. However, it’s important to respect the environment and the local wildlife.

If you plan to do wild camping in Albania it’s important to be aware of the area’s wildlife. There are a variety of wildlife species in Albania, including bears, wolves, and wild boars.

Make sure to be aware of their presence and take the necessary precautions!

2. Take Some Extra Food for the Street Doggies

Albania is home to a large population of stray dogs. While these dogs are generally friendly, it’s important to be aware of their presence.

The dogs which you mostly have to watch out for are in fact shepherd dogs. Shepherds roam the land with their flock and quite often a pack of dogs. And some of them can be quite aggressive.

If possible, it’s also a good idea to take some extra food for the dogs. Many stray dogs need food and medical attention; even a small gesture can make a big difference in their lives.

3. In the North, Be Careful of Wolves in the Winter

In the northern region of Albania, there is a small population of wolves. While these wolves generally avoid humans, it’s important to be aware of their presence and take the necessary precautions.

If you’re camping in this region during winter, make noise and stay close to your campsite.

4. In Case of Emergency Numbers

Albania is a very safe country, but that doesn’t mean that things can’t go wrong. If you are have an emergency, there are several numbers you can call for help.

The ambulance number is 127, the fire brigade number is 128, the rescue police number is 129, and the traffic police number is 126.

It’s also important to know the local hospitals and clinics in case you need medical assistance.

Many of the larger cities in Albania have hospitals and clinics, but it’s important to be aware of the location of these facilities before setting out.

Albania has everything, whether you’re looking for a wild camping experience or a more luxurious option.

There are plenty of great campsites in Albania, ranging from rustic, wild camping spots to more luxurious, full-service campsites.

Albania is a land of stunning natural beauty, from its rugged mountains and pristine beaches to its lush forests and crystal-clear lakes, and I share my favourite spots in my best places to visit in Albania guide.

The country is a paradise for outdoorsy types, and it’s no wonder that camping is so popular here.

The wild camping Albania offers is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But the more luxurious Albania camping is also amazing (and if you want proper walls, see my luxury hotels in Albania).

You’ll find whatever type of camping experience you’re looking for in Albania. Here are 13 of the best Albania campsites to check out:

1. Porto Palermo – Wild camping

If you’re looking for one of the wildest Albania campsites experience, look no further than Porto Palermo.

This beachside campground is situated in a remote corner of the Albania coastline, and it’s ideal for those who want to get away from it all.

The beach here is stunning, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding area, including the small castle on the bay (I’ve written more about castles in Albania).

Porto Palermo is great for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and relax. It is a great place to go wild camping, as no designated campsites exist here.

You’ll need to bring your camping gear and supplies, but you’ll be rewarded with stunning views and plenty of opportunities to explore the area.

Porto Palermo is a great option if you’re looking for a wild camping experience but just keep in mind that in the summer, most of the Albanian Riviera can get quite busy.

2. Gjipe – Wild camping

Gjipe is a good opportunity for a wild camping experience in Albania! This beach is located on the country’s southern coast and is a great place to camp if you want to escape the city noise.

The beach here is stunning and it’s a great place to relax, swim, and explore nature.

This is a popular, laid-back beach that is a 20-minute walk away. Some signs prohibit free camping on the beach, yet people still do it.

On the shore, there is also a ‘campground,’ so if you want to opt for something more official, you can do that.

If you have a 4-wheel-drive vehicle (see my tips on hiring a car in Albania), you can drive onto the beach and stay overnight; otherwise, you can park in the car park overnight.

3. Orikum Beach – Wild Camping

You can also choose Orikum Beach as one of your destinations for Albania campsites. This beach is located in the country’s south and is a great place to do something different during the summer (or pair it with one of the summer music festivals in Albania).

The beach here is stunning, and many other people will be camping. You are going to have the time of your life.

The beach camping Albania offers is much better than spending money staying at big resorts and hotels (although there are a lot of amazing hotels in Albania).

4. Theth Village – Wild Camping

Theth Village will be among the most amazing experiences if you like Albania campsites.

This small village is located in the north of the country, and it’s a great place to camp if you’re looking for fresh air and just nature.

The village is stunning, the residents are so welcoming, not to mention the traditional Albanian food: everything bio! You can ask the locals where it is better to camp. And they will be happy to help you.

While in the area, be sure to check out the breathtaking Theth to Valbona hike, and explore some of the amazing things to do in Theth.

5. Benje Hot Pools, Permet – Wild Camping

This is one of my favourite spots in Albania and one of the reasons why I love Albania! The Benje hot pools in Permet are one of the best Albania campsites.

This hot spring is located in the south of the country, and if you go there just for the thermal baths, get your bath suit and dive in the amazingly warm water pools.

Healthy for the body, for your mind! The hot spring is stunning, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding area.

6. Livadhi Beach – Wild Camping

Livadhi Beach is a vast stony beach near the beach city of Himare, which you can reach by bus (see my Albania bus timetables). It’s a laid-back neighborhood with stores, restaurants, and three campgrounds.

While there, you will see other vans parked on the beach. The water is incredibly pure, and some beautiful smaller bays are just over the hill. Perfect for a long vacation.

7. Borsh Beach – Wild Camping

Borsh Beach is one of the top beaches in Albania. This beach is located in the south of the country, and it’s a great place to camp if you’re looking for a remote spot to get away from it all.

The beach here is amazing, with turquoise waters, sand, and delicious food at nearby beach restaurants, and it’s an incredible place to experience one of the Albania campsites.

Borsh has the longest stretch of beach in Albania (just one of many interesting facts about Albania) so there’s plenty of room!

8. Cape of Rodon – Wild Camping

The Cape of Rodon is definitely a worthy spot for wild Albania campsites.

This cape is located in the north of the country, and it’s a great place to camp if you’re looking for a remote spot to get away from it all.

The cape here is stunning, and it’s a great place to relax, swim, and explore the surrounding area. Cape of Rodon is a great spot for wild camping, as it’s located in a remote corner of Albania.

If you’re looking for a wild camping experience near the northern part of the country, Cape of Rodon is a great option.

9. Osumi Canyon

It’s worthwhile spending the night in the Osumi Canyons, one of the more unique things to do in Albania. However, the only method is by the tent. Before the river enters the beautiful gorges, you can easily camp on the (left) side of Osum.

But ensure the terrain is high enough to keep you safe if the weather worsens.

Arriving in the valley, pitch your tent (keeping an eye out for sandy patches) and gather some fuel for the night.

There is also a colourful town nearby called Corovoda where you can grab supplies (and maybe some Albanian souvenirs) before you head out.

10. Camping Moskato in Himare

Camping Moskato in Himare is a great option for those seeking a more luxurious camping experience in Albania.

This campsite is located on the beautiful Albanian Riviera, and it offers full-service camping facilities, including a restaurant, a bar, and a beach.

You’ve come to the correct place if you want to go swimming, diving or boating (or join one of the Albania tours and excursions I recommend).

Camping Moskato in Himare welcomes you with crystal-clear, deep blue waters and one of the prettiest and cleanest beaches on the southwestern Albanian Riviera.

You’ll camp directly on the white, fine-pebble beach shaded by an olive grove.

Experience the breathtaking sunsets while looking out over the outline of this amazing sea.

Because of its proximity to the vibrant beach town of Himara, this campsite is an ideal starting point for various journeys through southern Albania and the hilly interior, including the Albania UNESCO sites of Gjirokastra and Butrint.

11. Glamour Camping Paradise in Ksamil

Glamour Camping Paradise in Ksamil is a great option for those who want to explore the south.

This campsite is located on the beautiful Albanian Riviera, and it offers full-service camping facilities, including a restaurant, a bar, and a beach.

It’s a great spot to relax, swim, and explore the surrounding area.

Glamour Camping Paradise is a great option for those seeking a more luxurious camping experience in Albania. The campsite is well-equipped, and you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore the area.

Just keep in mind that in the summer, Ksamil can get very busy so if you’re looking for peace and tranquillity, unfortunately, Ksamil is not that in the summer.

12. Camping Legjenda in Shkoder

The camping spot and resort is nestled within the woodlands and offers many spaces for tents, caravans, and trailers, with equipment ranging from the most basic to the most luxurious and with all utilities.

All 60 of the wide pitches with green grass are wired for power.

Each caravan, camper, or tent is next to two groups of bathrooms equipped with washing machines, dryers, ironing boards, and a children’s bathroom.

In addition, they have constructed a children’s area, a playground, and a swimming pool. Even Camping Legjenda is one of the most visited Albania campsites in the north.

13. Lukove Beach – Wild Camping

Lukova beach is ranked high on my best Albania beaches list. I regularly visit this beach all throughout the year because it’s so beautiful.

This beach is great for solo travelers, families and those who just want to get away from the hustle of the cities.

It is a wide shoreline with sparkling turquoise sea and lights fine pebbles, so no special shoes are required.

The water’s entrance is extremely acute. During the peak season, it can get busy however, it’s nothing compared to some other beaches nearby.

Even though resorts occupy a substantial portion of the beach, there is still a reasonably large area with free access.

You can also walk further down either side of the main beach area and you’ll find secluded bays and truly wild camping spots.

Many water sports are also available, such as catamarans and jet skis. This is totally one of the best Albania campsites.

Albania Camping Checklist

Before you go camping in Albania, there are a few things you’ll need to make sure you have on your Albania packing list.

Here’s a checklist of essential items for camping in Albania:

1. Tent: Make sure you have a waterproof tent with enough space for everyone camping with you.
2. Sleeping Bag: Bring a sleeping bag rated for the temperatures you will be camping in.
3. Water Bottle: Bring a reusable water bottle or hydration pack to stay hydrated easily.
4. Flashlight: A flashlight is essential for finding your way around at night.
5. First Aid Kit: Make sure you have a first aid kit in case of any emergencies.
6. Appropriate shoes: Bring clothing appropriate for the weather and sturdy shoes for hiking because there are lots of great walks in the spots we have mentioned.
7. Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
8. Insect Repellent: Bring insect repellent to keep bugs away.
9. Toiletries: Don’t forget to bring toiletries like soap, a toothbrush, and toilet paper.
10. Food: Bring enough food for your entire camping trip.

Once you’ve ensured you have all these items, you can go camping in Albania. But some other things that you have to make sure to get are:

1. Camping Shower

If you’re camping in Albania, having a camping shower with you is nice, especially in the summer. A camping shower is a portable water container with a handheld shower head.

You can fill the container with warm water and use it to shower while you’re camping. This is great for maintaining hygiene while you’re in the wilderness.

Several camping showers are available, so research and find one that works best.
