2. Wine Tasting Tour in Durrës

Durrës doesn’t get talked about as a wine destination, but Albania’s wine scene is genuinely underrated, and a tasting tour here is a good way to combine the coast with something you wouldn’t normally plan around.

I haven’t done a specific tasting tour myself, but Durrës is a genuinely well-known wine region in Albania.

What I love about Albanian wine generally is how natural it tends to be, without the preservatives and additives you get elsewhere, so it rarely leaves you feeling rough the next day.

If wine isn’t really your thing, there’s plenty else worth doing back in the capital on my list of things to do in Tirana.

3. Ancient History in Apollonia

Apollonia is one of the most underrated archaeological sites in the country, a genuinely huge ancient city that most visitors to Albania never make it to.

The site also includes a 13th century monastery, which makes for a nice contrast, ancient Greek ruins sitting alongside medieval Christian architecture in the same afternoon.

I’ve actually been to Apollonia three times over the years I’ve lived here, always independently rather than on a guided tour, and I fall for it every single time. If you’d rather skip the organised tours altogether, I’ve rounded up my favourite independent day trips from Tirana too.

What still blows my mind is that only around 5% of the site has actually been excavated, you can walk around for an hour to an hour and a half and still be finding new corners.

4. Hiking, Bovilla Lake and Kruja

This tour pairs two very different things in one day, a proper hike out at Bovilla Lake, roughly an hour from Tirana, and a stop in Kruja, a hillside town known for its castle and bazaar.

I’ve been to Bovilla myself and the lake is stunning, though the access road is genuinely rough, so I’d rather let a tour operator deal with that than drive it myself.

This one’s easy to slot into a 3 days in Tirana itinerary if you want a change of pace from the city.

5. Visit the North Village of Theth and the Blue Eye

This is one of the most beautiful day trips out of Tirana, though I’ll be honest, it’s also one of the longest, so you’re committing most of your day to travel.

Theth, part of the Albanian Alps, and the Blue Eye, a natural spring so clear it looks almost artificial, are both genuinely worth the drive if scenery is the priority for your trip.

I haven’t done this exact tour myself, but I’ve been to both Theth and the Blue Eye, and this is genuinely one of my favourite corners of Albania.

It’s part of why people nickname the north “the Switzerland of Albania”, the nature up here is some of the most incredible I’ve seen anywhere in the country.

One tip, make sure your phone has plenty of storage before you go, you’ll want to film all of it.

It’s a long day, but it’s exactly the kind of contrast that makes me confident saying is Tirana worth visiting as your base for the rest of the country.

6. Shala River and Komani Lake

Komani Lake is one of the most photographed spots in Albania for good reason, a ferry ride through a fjord-like reservoir surrounded by mountains, with the Shala River feeding into it.

I’ve actually done the Komani Lake ferry ride myself, and it’s every bit as good as the photos suggest.

People love nicknaming Albanian regions after other countries, and I’ve seen this one called “the Thailand of Albania”, which I wouldn’t personally go that far with since I’ve spent a lot of time in Thailand and it’s a very different kind of beautiful, but the canyons rising up on either side of the lake are genuinely mind-blowing. You’ll usually be back in Tirana with enough of the evening left to grab a drink at one of the best bars in the city, which takes the edge off a long day in the car. Or if you want to learn to cook that food yourself rather than just eat it, I’d genuinely recommend the Tirana cooking class for a low-key day back in the city between tours.

The Shala River stretch is just as striking.

7. Explore Ohrid, Macedonia

Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest lakes in the world, and the town on its shore is a UNESCO-listed mix of Byzantine churches and cobbled streets, a genuinely different pace to anywhere in Albania.

I haven’t made it to Ohrid myself yet, so I can’t speak to it firsthand, but I’ve got friends who’ve been and loved it, and it’s a solid pick if you want a taste of a neighbouring Balkan country without committing to a separate trip.

Worth basing yourself in the right neighbourhood in Tirana if you’ve got an early start for this one.

8. Private Tour of Budva and Kotor, Montenegro

This one covers two towns in a single day, Budva’s beach-town energy and Kotor’s dramatic bay setting, both a step up in polish from most Albanian coastal towns.

I’ve actually been to both Budva and Kotor myself, and Kotor might be my favourite spot in Montenegro, even though it does get busy and it’s a proper trek from Tirana.

It’s worth it though, and if a separate Montenegro trip isn’t in your plans, this tour is a genuinely good taste of what you’re missing.

9. Prishtina and Prizren, Kosovo

Kosovo is right on Albania’s doorstep, and this tour covers Prishtina, the capital, and Prizren, generally considered the more charming of the two, alongside UNESCO sites in the region.

I’ve visited Kosovo two or three times myself and it’s genuinely one of my favourite countries in the region, I was actually meant to go back this year and ran out of time.

Kosovo’s history is recent and heavy, the genocide there happened as recently as the 1990s, and I’d genuinely recommend spending time hearing the stories from locals rather than just sightseeing.

The country also has a very young population as a direct result of that history, which gives it a distinct energy, plus genuinely great cafés, restaurants and some of the friendliest people I’ve met anywhere.

Both Prishtina and Prizren are worth your time on this one.
