Escaping the Winter Blues: Try a Walking Holiday For New Years

It’s gloomy, raining and dark.  Yes, you are experiencing the typical British winter, but not to worry because you can travel to a warmer destination like Spain or Malta and try a walking holiday to avoid the guilt of doing nothing.  Often for New Year’s, we over-indulge in food and alcohol, but what if you could start the year by doing something uniquely different and good for your mind, body, and soul.  Inntravel has been offering walking tours around Europe since the 1980’s and I think their tours are the perfect way to holiday.  Here are 5 reasons why you should consider one of the Inntravels walking tours for this New Years!

 Escape the winter

We all know the winter in England is miserable, so it is essential you travel to experience some winter sun elsewhere to get a good dose of Vitamin D!  You don’t have to wait months for summer to arrive.  New years is a fun time to have a holiday to break up the year, not to mention its off-season for most destinations on this side of the world which means fewer people.

Experience New Years in a unique way

Sometimes the old new year’s parties can get boring as they are usually all the same.  It’s a competition on who can drink the most and everyone takes bets on who will fall asleep before the new year has even begun.  The whole drama of finding the perfect glittery dress and matching heels can get quite boring year after year, which is why I love the idea of a walking tour. It’s the opposite of what most people will be doing on New Years day.

Kickstart your resolutions

It’s is a fun time to start thinking about those resolutions and if being a little healthier is one of them then maybe you should start the year off with a bang in a much warmer destination while walking.  New Year’s Day is usually a write off for most people.  Can you imagine how amazing it would feel to wake up refreshed and be able to celebrate the day of the new year?!  So, if changing your lifestyle to become healthier is one of your resolutions then that’s the perfect reason to book one of these tours!  In many cultures, they say, ‘start the year as you mean to go on’ so start the new year healthier and your goals may just come true.

Explore new and exciting destinations

Travel is all about seeing and experiencing new destinations as well as meeting new people and being introduced to exciting cultures.  By doing a self-guided walking tour you get to explore the destination in the flesh and really delve deep into what that country is all about.  There’s nothing more exciting than travelling to a country that isn’t your own.  I always say that the best form of education you can get is travel.

“Travelling – leaves you speechless then turns you into a storyteller” – Ibn Battuta

You don’t have to be a fitness freak

Don’t worry about your fitness level because these tours are aimed for all, even if you are an amateur walker.  There is always a walk that will be suited for you so if you’re worried about keeping up, don’t.  Take it at your pace and enjoy the walk!  It is supposed to be fun so don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

Tell me below which Inntravel tour you would love to experience!

I was JUST talking to someone about walking holidays in the UK- I had no idea they were so popular! I have to say, walking and biking are my favourite ways to explore a new place versus taking a bus or something, since you inevitably stumble along cool things along the way!

traveling indeed is the best way to be educated on a certain places. I’d love doing walking tours as well, as you get to immersed with much more time. Also, your blog perfectly fits the holiday season 🙂

You had me at ‘kickstart your resolutions’! LOL.. I’m like a pretty lousy person on New Year’s Day (it’s like a good day rest from the late party the night before), so a walking tour does seem like a good way to start a healthier lifestyle for the new year ahead…

A walking tour sounds fun to me. We love to walk around cities, parks, or pretty much anywhere. I never thought to go on a walking tour for New Years eve.

I love walking so I’m already sold on this idea. Love exploring on foot, because there’s always something new to discover. I love how you connected touring with the New Year — it’s definitely a good and symbolic way to start fresh and invigorated for the future.

Starting the new year off in a healthy way does sound like a good change of pace! We love walking around a new city to get a feel for the different districts and neighborhoods. This year we’ll be in Malaysia over new years, and looking forward to some fun outdoor adventures there! 😀

I love the idea of taking a walking holiday for New Years – not only is it a great way to find somewhere warmer to spend winter, but I love the approach of kick starting your resolutions – they always say how you spend Jan 1 is indicative of how you’ll spend the year!

I love walking in the woods and just exploring the nature. Walking is just a great way to get out of the house and to look up from screens and just explore.

This is a great holiday idea. I tend to start my travel year in Canada.

Hoping to do more of the exploring for sure. I hope that 2018 gets us all to destinations that we have been wanting to go to. And yes, more of walking and trekking on my list too.

I think I love the idea of a walking holiday…there is always something to see even within one’s own city/ town that you often don’t need to travel somewhere far to do this 🙂

I think I will follow your advice and do something refreshing on the first day of the year the coming year 🙂
