There are two main ways to get from Tirana to Saranda, the fast inland route or the scenic coastal road.

Traffic in Tirana can be wild, especially during the mornings or late afternoons, so do not be surprised if you are stuck in the city for an hour before you even leave.

If you have time and want to enjoy the views, you can take the coastal route.

This way is absolutely stunning, with winding roads and seaside stops all the way down through the Albanian Riviera.

Expect the journey to take at least five hours, and probably longer because you will definitely want to stop off in places like Himara, Dhermi or the Llogara Pass.

This route is best if you are driving yourself so you have the freedom to pull over whenever something catches your eye.

If you are taking the Tirana to Saranda bus, you will go via the faster inland route.

The bus usually takes around four to five hours depending on the company, road conditions and how many stops it makes.

It is not the most exciting ride, but it gets you there without the stress of driving.

So whether you are after speed or scenery, you have got options, and both will land you in beautiful Saranda.

If you are travelling on a budget, the bus from Tirana to Saranda is your best bet.

The journey usually takes around four to five hours and costs between 1300 to 1500 lek.

The price can vary depending on the bus company, and yes, sometimes it changes without notice, especially in the summer months.

Most of the buses in Albania are privately owned, so prices are not always consistent and timetables can be a bit flexible too.

You will need to catch the bus from the Regional Bus Terminal in Tirana, which is where all the intercity buses leave from, including the one to Saranda.

Now, when you arrive at the terminal, do not be surprised if a group of men approach you asking where you are going.

This might feel overwhelming at first, but do not ignore them.

All you have to do is say, “I want to go to Saranda,” and they will point you to the right one.

I still remember the first time I arrived in Albania.

I walked into the bus station and suddenly about ten men swarmed me asking where I wanted to go.

I just shouted, “Saranda!” and before I knew it, someone had taken my suitcase and popped me onto the correct bus.

      Happy days.

Just remember, Albanian bus stations are not like what you might be used to.

They can often look more like car parks than actual terminals, so do not expect digital screens or fancy signs.

If you are ever unsure, just ask someone.

People are incredibly helpful and used to travellers being a bit lost, a smile and a question go a long way here.

If you are hiring a car and planning to drive from Tirana to Saranda, you have two route options, the fast inland way or the scenic coastal road.

The motorway route is the quicker of the two, taking around three and a half to four hours depending on traffic.

The road conditions are mostly excellent, with stretches of motorway and some smaller roads that are still very decent.

You will pass by plenty of petrol stations and local restaurants along the way, so it is easy to stop for a snack or a coffee break.

One of my favourite spots for food is a place called ODA, which is just outside of Saranda.

It is super popular with locals, especially those doing the drive between cities, and the traditional food is absolutely delicious.

If you decide to take the coastal route, get ready for a completely different experience.

The drive takes longer, around five hours minimum, and that is if you do not stop, which you definitely will.

The views along this road are breathtaking, with dramatic cliffs, turquoise water and cute seaside towns all the way down the Albanian Riviera.

The road is fully paved but very windy, so take your time and do not rush it.

There are some tight bends and narrow sections, but nothing too scary, just go slow and enjoy the ride.

If you want a little preview of what to expect, the show Top Gear once filmed an episode in Albania and drove this route.

You can actually see what the roads look like from the driver’s seat, which gives a great feel for what is ahead.

Driving in Albania is one of the best ways to see the country because you can explore at your own pace and stop wherever you fancy.

Whether you go for speed or scenery, both road options offer something unique, and they will both get you to Saranda safely.

If you are in a rush or just want to avoid the hassle of buses and luggage dragging, taking a taxi from Tirana to Saranda is a great option.

It is the easiest and most direct way to get from door to door.

No bus stops, no changing terminals, just straight from where you are to where you want to be.

Taxi prices can vary quite a bit depending on the company and the season.

Expect to pay anywhere between 120 to 200 euros for a one-way trip.

I will include some of my recommended services within this post, so keep an eye out for those links.

Just one thing to note, sometimes these are shared taxis, which means you might be grouped with other travellers going the same way.

If you prefer a private ride, make sure you confirm that at the time of booking.

Always double check with the company or the driver directly, especially if you are arriving by plane.

I have had friends who were left stranded at Tirana airport because their driver cancelled at the last minute or simply did not wait when the flight was delayed.

So keep your driver updated, confirm on the day, and have a back-up contact just in case.

When it works smoothly, it is the most relaxing way to reach Saranda, but a little communication goes a long way.

Always pre-book your taxi, don’t just hop into a taxi at the airport because they will give you a very bad price.

So, what is the best way to get from Tirana to Saranda?

Well, that really depends on your travel style.

If you are a backpacker, on a budget or just want to experience Albania like a local, the bus is a fantastic choice.

It is affordable, fairly straightforward and usually has air conditioning.

It can get busy during the summer, so always take water with you and expect at least one stop along the way.

If you are short on time or simply do not want the faff, then driving or taking a private car is ideal.

It is especially worth it if you are travelling with friends or family and want to take the scenic route at your own pace.

And if you want the most stress-free option of them all, then booking a taxi or private transfer is the way to go.

You will be picked up and dropped off exactly where you need to be, with no lugging bags around or waiting at bus stops.

Whichever way you choose, getting from Tirana to Saranda is easier than you might think, and the destination is always worth the journey.
