I’m sure some of you dread the thought of travelling alone, maybe even eating in a cafe alone or being alone in a public place. It can be scary at first, but I’m here to convince you that travelling alone can be empowering and a great thing to try out once in your lifetime. When I was at the airport at 19 years old having just said goodbye to my family, I started to freak out a little bit. The thought of actually making decisions for myself was a scary thought. After travelling alone quite a lot, I can now see that travelling alone is a wonderful experience and here is why..
You can do WHATEVER you want WHENEVER you want. Making your own itinerary can be a lot of fun. You can skip what your travelling buddy would normally want to go do and just go wherever your heart desires! It’s all about you. Being selfish for a day feels great if you were always doing what other people want to do.
You meet the most inspirational and truly amazing people. Travelling alone means you actually have to talk to random people and make an effort to make friends. When you have a travelling buddy or are travelling with a group you tend to isolate yourself. I found being alone on a tour was the best thing I could have done because I made the effort to make some really great friends. Head to a local bar and meet some locals or even just in your accommodation! This is a great way to get to truly know a place abroad.
You gain confidence. Anyone that has travelled alone can tell you, you definitely do gain this when travelling solo. You have to be confident in yourself that you can look after yourself. You have to pluck up the courage to ask random people where this and that is. I once was so desperate for help I had to go up to a parked car and politely ask a man where a certain street was that I was forever looking for! Talk about embarrassing, but man did that give me a confidence boost and also a few points on creepiness. All I could think of is how scared I would be if someone walked up to my car and knocked on my window. A girl had to do what a girl had to do. Don’t be scared to go up to people on the street and ask for help. When you start travelling this is something you cannot be scared of doing otherwise you will get very, very lost.
You learn more about yourself. No, I haven’t gone crazy but unless you have travelled alone you won’t know what I’m talking about so I will try explain. Being alone in your own company makes you really think about yourself and about what you want to do. We are usually so influenced by everyone around us that it is nice to take a step back and figure out what we are doing at this moment of time. This is a great time to write down future goals and dreams. I always come up with the best ideas and life-changing strategies when I’m by myself!
So there are a few reasons why you should think about travelling alone. Even if it is for a weekend trip in your own country! Try it and you will never regret it.
