Saranda or Ksamil: Which Is Better? My Honest Take After Living Here 2026

Can’t decide between Saranda or Ksamil for your Albania getaway?

You’re not alone.

It’s one of the most common questions I get, and honestly, I totally get why.

I’ve been living in Saranda since 2017 and popping down to Ksamil more times than I can count.

So yeah, I know the vibe of both like the back of my hand.

If your dream holiday is all about beach bars, clear water, and pure chill, Ksamil might be your match.

But if you’re after something with a bit more variety, like local culture, adventure, and day trips, Saranda might just steal your heart.

In this guide, I’ll break down the key differences (from a local’s perspective!) so you can choose the right base for your kind of trip.

Quick Answer: Saranda or Ksamil?

⭐⭐⭐ My pick? Stay in Saranda and do Ksamil as a day trip. There’s simply more on offer.

⭐⭐ Where should you stay? Vale Hotel in Saranda, or Poda Boutique Hotel if you’d rather wake up in Ksamil. Check prices & availability →

⭐ How should you get around? Hire a car. It’s one straight road between the two. Compare car rental prices →

Ksamil vs Sarande – What’s the Big Difference?

Although they’re just a 20-minute drive apart, Ksamil and Saranda offer two very different travel experiences.

This image captures a serene waterfront promenade on a sunny day, lined with evenly spaced pine trees supported by wooden stakes. A paved pathway runs alongside the calm, sparkling blue water, with benches and streetlights adding to the relaxed, coastal atmosphere. People are seen walking and enjoying the pleasant weather, while modern buildings and palm trees are visible in the background under a clear blue sky.

Saranda is a bustling coastal city with all the perks of urban life – restaurants, cafes, nightlife and easy access to day trips around the region.

Ksamil, on the other hand, is officially classed as a village, and that’s exactly how it feels – smaller, and centred entirely around its beaches.

If your idea of a holiday is hopping from beach bar to beach club with a cocktail in hand, Ksamil is your dream spot.

But if you want a more dynamic base with things to do beyond the beach, Saranda is the better choice.

During the high season, from July through to the end of August, both spots get extremely busy.

This part of the Albanian Riviera is often compared to the Maldives or Mykonos of Albania, and it’s become one of the most visited places in the country.

Trust me, I’ve seen the crowds grow every year, and while the buzz is exciting, it’s definitely not for everyone.

If you can, visit outside the high season.

May, June or September offer a far more relaxed vibe without sacrificing the beauty.

Now, while Ksamil is a village, don’t expect it to be quiet in summer.

It gets absolutely packed and most of the beaches are taken up by sun loungers.

Beaches – Which Has the Best Coastline?

Let’s be real, if we’re talking sheer beauty, Ksamil beaches win hands down.

The water is crystal-clear, the colour is that dreamy turquoise, and the vibe feels almost tropical.

You’ll find sandy beaches right in the centre of Ksamil, but it’s important to note that the sand isn’t natural.

Much of Albania’s coastline is naturally pebbly, so any sand you see along the Albanian Riviera, especially in Ksamil, has likely been brought in.

Natural sand beaches do exist, but they’re mostly found further north, around Cape Rodon and Durrës.

This aerial photo shows two small, lush islands covered in dense greenery, connected by a narrow sandy isthmus surrounded by shallow turquoise waters. The islands are encircled by darker blue ocean, with visible rocky shorelines and underwater reefs creating a vivid contrast. The shape and layout give the impression of a natural heart or butterfly formation when viewed from above.

Still, Ksamil’s beaches are stunning, and there are even more beautiful spots just outside the village like Pasqyra Beach and Pulebardha, which are worth the short drive.

In high season, Ksamil gets completely packed, and beach access often means paying for a sunbed.

Prices can range from €20 to as much as €100 for a pair in the busiest months.

If you’re lucky, you might still snag one for 1,000 lek, but that’s becoming rarer each summer.

There are new regulations expected for 2025 that aim to return more beach space to the public, so sunbeds may be limited this year, but we’ll have to see how that plays out.

This aerial image showcases a rocky coastal area with a small beach and a cliffside building featuring white walls and a blue-trimmed terrace overlooking the sea. Clear turquoise waters lap against jagged rock formations, revealing submerged stones and a shallow seabed. A few white lounge chairs are neatly arranged on the sandy-pebble beach, adding to the peaceful and scenic Mediterranean vibe.

Between Ksamil and Saranda, you’ll also find some hidden gems like Lukova Beach and Mirror Beach, which offer a quieter, more rugged alternative.

In Saranda, the beaches stretch all along the coast, offering a mix of lively and laid-back options.

The central beach is handy if you’re staying nearby and want to dip in for a swim without travelling far.

Try out saranda best restaurants on your next visit, ourdoor seating area with tables and chairs underneath beach umbrellas and wooden awnings with the sea behind

But my personal favourite spot? The beaches around Kodrra.

That’s where I go when I want a beach day without the chaos.

You’ll also find great swimming spots past the Hotel Mucobega area, where things feel a bit more wild and untouched.

And don’t miss Nalu Beach Bar, just outside of Saranda – it’s low-key and the perfect place to chill with a cocktail.

While Saranda’s beaches aren’t quite as postcard-perfect as Ksamil’s, they still offer gorgeous water, great beach bars, and a much more spacious feel.

Both places also offer water activities like jet skiing, paddleboarding and pedal rentals.

So in terms of fun in the sun, you really can’t go wrong with either – it just depends on what kind of beach experience you’re after.

Things to Do in Ksamil vs Saranda

Find the best beaches in ksamil for your next vacation, view of sandy beach lined with green trees and small buildings seen across a wide expanse of clear turquoise ocean under a clear blue sky

If you’re after variety and adventure, Saranda is where the action is.

From vibrant bars and buzzing nightlife to cultural landmarks and easy day trips, there’s just so much more to do here.

One of the most iconic spots is Lekursi Castle – the view at sunset is unreal.

You’ve also got the magical Blue Eye, which is a must-see and super easy to get to from Saranda.

The ferry to Corfu leaves directly from the port, so you can even hop over to Greece for the day.

If you’re up for exploring more of the Albanian Riviera, Saranda is the perfect base.

There’s a fantastic Saranda boat tour that leaves right from the centre and cruises along the coast to hidden coves and beaches.

Plus, you can drive or grab a taxi to nearby spots like Lukova, Bunec or even Borsh without much hassle.

If you’re staying in Ksamil and want to do these same day trips, just keep in mind it’ll add 20 to 30 minutes to your journey each time.

So while you can absolutely visit all these places from Ksamil, it’s just not as convenient.

This coastal scene shows a tranquil beach cove with crystal-clear turquoise water gently lapping against a sandy and rocky shoreline. Straw parasols and sunbeds are arranged on a raised terrace and the beach, where people are lounging and enjoying the sun. Across the bay, more beachgoers and umbrellas line the opposite shore, backed by rolling hills dotted with trees and low buildings. Small boats float in the calm water, enhancing the laid-back, Mediterranean beach vibe.

Ksamil is more about lazy beach days, hopping between beach bars, and soaking in the sun.

Water sports are popular here – you can hire jet skis, paddleboards or pedal boats for a bit of fun on the water.

And of course, Butrint National Park is a brilliant half-day trip that’s just down the road.

Visiting Butrint National Park, aerial shot of Butrint National Park with ruins and ancient buildings nestled amongst trees and green areas all surrounded by clear blue water

It’s an incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient ruins and peaceful walking trails.

But beyond that, Ksamil doesn’t offer a huge amount to “do”, it’s more about switching off and relaxing.

If you’re happy to lay by the sea with a cocktail in hand, you’ll love it.

Personally, I prefer Saranda because there’s simply more on offer, and it’s easier to get around and see more of the region.

My top tip? Stay in Saranda and make Ksamil a day trip.

Also, something to be aware of – Ksamil can get really loud at night, especially in the central area.

It’s a small place with bars blasting music late into the night, so if you’re sensitive to noise, don’t stay too close to the centre.

Best for Families vs Solo Travellers vs Couples

      Best for Families

If you’re travelling with young kids or you’re a couple looking for pure relaxation, then Ksamil is a great option.

It’s a classic beach holiday spot – sun, sea, beach bars and not much else to think about.

Families often love Ksamil because it’s easy to just settle in by the water and enjoy slow days together.

A smiling woman wearing a green floral bucket hat, black tank top, and towel sits on the edge of a moving boat. Behind her, the turquoise sea trails with white wake as the boat cruises past a forested shoreline and a backdrop of arid hills. Another person and an outstretched hand appear nearby, adding a candid, relaxed feel.

      Best for Solo Travellers

But if you’re the kind of traveller who needs a bit more stimulation – whether you’re a solo adventurer, a couple who loves exploring, or a family that wants to keep things interesting, then Saranda is the better base.

You won’t be stuck doing the same thing every day, and there’s always something new to discover nearby.

This is one of the biggest reasons I always recommend staying in Saranda and making Ksamil a day trip.

      Best for Couples

If you’re into luxurious beach bars and a splash of glam, then Ksamil will definitely be your vibe.

It’s often compared to places like luxury party places like Mykonos, and you’ll absolutely feel that energy in peak season, think stylish beach clubs, loud music, and that classic summer party atmosphere.

So if you’re here to socialise, sip cocktails and sunbathe in style, you’ll love what Ksamil has to offer.

Safety, Internet & Ease of Travel

In terms of safety and internet? Both Saranda and Ksamil are very similar.

I’ve always felt safe in both, and Wi-Fi is generally strong, depending on your accommodation and the provider.

When it comes to getting around or doing day trips, Saranda definitely has the edge, and it’s also the easier arrival point from Greece (here’s how I travel from Athens to Saranda).

It’s more connected and central, so exploring the Albanian Riviera, hopping on the ferry to Corfu, or visiting nearby attractions is simply easier.

Budget Breakdown – Is Ksamil or Saranda More Expensive?

      Ksamil Prices

If you’re visiting during high season, Ksamil is definitely the more expensive option.

With limited restaurants and accommodation, prices shoot up quickly once July hits.

Ksamil has become a bit of a hotspot for luxury travel, and even Dua Lipa has a place nearby.

It’s not unusual to see celebrities holidaying here in summer, and that kind of exclusivity comes with a price tag.

If you’re hoping for a budget-friendly escape, Ksamil might not be the best choice, especially during July and August.

There are still some affordable stays if you book early, but expect to pay more overall for food, accommodation and beach access.

      Saranda Prices

Saranda offers far more flexibility when it comes to budget.

Whether you’re after a hostel, a modest Airbnb or a boutique hotel, there’s something for every price point.

You can absolutely enjoy a luxury stay in Saranda, but it’s also very possible to visit on a tighter budget without missing out.

And if you’re travelling with a group of up to seven or eight people, I actually rent out my Airbnb here in Saranda, so feel free to check it out if you’re looking for a comfortable, trustworthy place to stay.

      Top Tip for Budget Travellers

No matter where you stay, book as early as possible, especially if you’re coming in July or August.

The closer you get to summer, the fewer options you’ll have and the more you’ll pay.

Prices rise fast in both locations once the season kicks in, so the earlier you plan, the better your chances of getting a great deal.

My Number One Tip: Hire a Car for Full Flexibility

If you’re staying a few nights, it’s so much easier with your own wheels. You can base yourself in Saranda, spend a beach day in Ksamil and still be back in town for dinner.

Which Should You Choose To Stay In?

If you’re after pure beach vibes, you’ve got a little more budget to work with, and your goal is to just relax by the water for a few days without worrying about day trips, then Ksamil could be a great choice.

This vibrant beach scene features a lively coastal area with rows of white umbrellas and sun loungers packed with beachgoers enjoying the sunny day. The beach leads into calm, clear turquoise water where people are swimming and wading. A rustic wooden deck extends over the shoreline, furnished with straw parasols and colorful lounge beds. In the background, a lush green island sits just offshore, surrounded by serene blue sea and distant mountainous terrain under a lightly clouded sky.

It’s perfect if you’re planning to visit other parts of Albania afterwards and don’t mind keeping it simple while you’re in the south.

Think of it as the Mykonos of Albania, with beach bars, sunbeds, and a whole lot of holiday energy.

But if you’re a budget, mid-range or even luxury traveller who wants more than just the beach, like a good range of restaurants, fun bars and easy access to day trips, then Saranda is the better base.

You’ll have more flexibility, more to explore and more variety, which is why I always recommend staying in Saranda and doing Ksamil as a day trip.

And it’s honestly so easy to do.

The local bus from Saranda to Ksamil costs around 150 lek and takes just 20 to 30 minutes.

If you’re renting a car, it’s a straight road and very easy to navigate.

So you can enjoy a beach day in Ksamil, then head back to Saranda in time for dinner at a great local restaurant.

It really gives you the best of both worlds.
